Hanou's Blog

The reason for writing this post is that, it is the only way I can kill my sleep in office today….I haven’t been having proper sleep for the past 5 days (watching Prison Break at late nights till early mornings)…It’s been fine these last 4 days, but today? Man! I’m just dozing off at my desk..and I don’t even have any work today …just my luck!!

I reached office at around 10:30am..checked mails and chatted with team mates till11am..started dozing off soon after I settled in my seat…I tried hard to keep my eyes open..This fight continued till 1pm…then I got a cup of tea, opened timesofindia.com, ndtv.com, googled cloud computing, themes for wordpress (they helped a little)…then the lunch call came at around 2

I go out for lunch with 3 other friends who work in a different company. I meet them up at one point where they come to pick me up…aaj mere se chala nahi jaa raha tha!! I was finding it very difficult to walk..everything was very fuzzy…I felt like there’s an anchor tied to my feet…but there’s also the stomach crying for food…so I managed…I had a hearty lunch..requested my friends to drop me at my office gate 😉

I thought I was feeling much better when I got back. But alas! the sleep attack was awaiting me and it did attack me within 5mins after I sat at my desk…The fight continued for sometime again, i.e to keep my eyes open..when I finally gave up and slept off peacefully for a good 45 mins…until I was caught by my manager..

Suddenly I got an idea of how to keep myself awake…I have a collection of all Garfield comic strips…so I started reading them…but damn damn damn!! it didn’t work! you know why? Coz all Garfield talks about is sleep and food!! I was dozing off already again… aaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrhhhhhhhhhhhhh!! It was when I got another cup of tea that I realized I had to write a blog to keep myself awake..at least for the next 2hrs of the day…then I couldn’t think of anything to write but this….. 😀 😀

Just a little info for people who are not aware of cloud computing in layman words:
Note: This is just my understanding. Please correct me if I’m wrong

When you have an application you want to host on the internet, you need the servers (number depending on the kind of application you are hosting), maybe people who will take care of your servers, the backup and disaster recovery methodology, etc. Now, there could be a case when your application doesn’t require all the space or servers that you have purchased. What can you do? Nothing!

Now Cloud Computing is nothing but a solution to such problem stated above (this is just one kind of the problems). With Cloud Computing, you have an option to utilize only required amount of space and pay for it. Like the postpaid/prepaid card facility of mobile connection. You pay only for how much you are utilizing. You need not have any server sitting on your desk at home or people to control it. You need not worry about recovery or backup. Everything is taken care of. All you need is a browser and an internet connection to access the application. You need not worry whether your OS is Windows, Linux or anything. Amazon is leading in providing Cloud Computing services. Google, Sun to name a few are also in line.

The name Cloud Computing refers to computing on internet. In any architectural diagram, internet has always been represented by a cloud. Hence the name “Cloud”.

That’s all I’m gonna write for now as our BU head is coming and I have to explain my work to him…Couldn’t I just send a mail?? 😦

{June 23, 2009}   Bing!!
Bing search page

Bing search page

Microsoft launched its BING on June 3rd. It claims that it is not a mere search engine but more of a decision engine. Bing would help people in making decisions on travel, health, shopping etc. It isn’t the first time Microsoft has come up with a search engine. I read somewhere (can’t recollect exactly where) that Microsoft had offered the people “special benefits” to use the previous search engine…hahahhaah 🙂

Well I “binged” a little ( 😀 😀 ). The search results aren’t that different from Google (but of course that’s quite obvious!!). Bing has a picture as a background which would change everyday, while Google maintains a clean white background. The font of the “GOOGLE” text, though, changes from time to time depending on season or occasion, etc. Everyone knows what Google looks like and how it works so am not getting into it. Bing and Google have almost the same search options (web, images, video, etc). What I liked about Bing is that, it has the “Search History” on the left hand panel. I think that is a good feature. When you search for an image e.g. tweety, you get a list of images right?. On clicking an image, the other remaining images get listed out on the left hand panel… 🙂 nice…You can also set your search preferences like location, safe search (level at which you want your search to filter out sexual text, images, etc), language and more. On the background picture, you also have links of places you may wanna find out more about. But most of these features are limited to US(English) country. Many features are missing when you change your country to any other. My understanding is that it is because the sites for other countries are still in Beta stage.

Your travel plan is just a click away. But this isn’t of your interest unless you are planning a travel to/from US. I hope they are working on incorporating the same feature for other countries too.
Google Vs Bing at Indiatimes.

To talk about decision engine…I think Google is providing no less. I mean at the end, after all the researching, it is the sole responsibility of an individual to take his/her own decision.

Well I am yet to find out more about Bing, so I’ll leave it at this point. Let’s see how it works for Microsoft.
Do you think Bing will outdo Google? Feel free to vote!!
